Milky Chance
Passenger of the Month May 2013
Lots of creative, promising and captivating artists & labels take off with recordJet every day. Each one of them has their own story to tell. Here are a few of our favourite recordJet success stories:
When Tobias Herder (then owner of Lichtdicht Records) approached us in 2013 with his latest signing, Milky Chance, the recordJet crew became fans immediately and was convinced of the potential these guys had!
The first single “Stolen Dance” picked up speed right away and with steady radio airplay, Milky Chance quickly rose up through the German single charts. The constant upward trend eventually saw the song peak at #2 and spend a fabulous 60 weeks in the charts.
“Sadnecessary”, Milky Chance’s debut album released almost 2 months later by recordJet, then entered in at #14 on the German albums chart and remained in the top 100 for a considerable 34 weeks.
All of this by the end of 2013. Milky Chance hit gold for selling 150,000 copies of “Stolen Dance”. Four months later, this became platinum for achieving double the sales figures. This was followed by two ECHO Nominations in 2014 as “National Rock/Pop Group” and “Most Successful Newcomer Nationally”, as well as a long overdue ECHO in 2015 as “National Act Abroad”. Milky Chance had previously cleaned up abroad and achieved gold in the United States for 500,000 sales and streams. Their first TV appearance in the USA with Jimmy Kimmel was the icing on the cake.
At the end of 2016 Paul (Alice’s manager) landed at recordJet with a hit in his luggage – and none of the major labels had let him on board so far.
Shortly thereafter “No Roots” by the enchanting Alice Merton began to fly high in the charts. Instead of releasing a second single right away, Alice’s team decided, after consultation with recordJet, to join forces and put more effort into “No Roots”.
Reward for confidence in the song soon came:
“No Roots” landed at #2 in Germany, #3 in Austria, #12 in Switzerland and even got to #1 in the singles charts in France. The track reached platinum status in Germany. The following first album “Mint” debuted at #2 in the German album charts.
We are incredibly proud of Alice and happy to welcome her back on board again and again. After all, she’s not interested in putting down any roots and that’s no problem as our jet flies everywhere.
Fynn Kliemann, aka fimbim, started publishing his songs on YouTube and thanks to his diverse formats began to build a similarly diverse fan base. When Four Music became aware of him as a musician and offered him a contract, he refused – and decided to stay his own boss. He then founded his label Two Finger Records and began to produce his album “nie”. In doing so, he dared to do something a little different:
“I’m only going to produce one physical copy of the album as I don’t like wasteful music production and don’t want the record to end up in a bargain bin at a discount store because too many copies were produced”.
A perfect passenger for recordJet. With his debut album, Fynn flew directly to #8 in the German album charts – WITHOUT physical sales being included and completely independently!
Ufo361, who grew up in Kreuzberg/Berlin and became known in the graffiti scene as part of the THC Crew, is a key player in the German hip hop scene! His steep flight to the top of the charts began at recordJet:
in 2016 he released his mixtape “Ich bin ein Berliner”, which, according to Backspin, was one of best in the year, and blew away the competition. With the finest German trap produced by the Broke Boys, big guests like Sido and Bonez MC and his very own style, Ufo361 entered directly into the German album charts.
As a result, he brought out his next mixtape as quick as anything – just six months later – with recordJet and landed at #13 in the album charts with “Ich bin 2 Berliner”. No wonder, because “every beat is clean and of high quality production, each part is well-rapped, the feature guests are well-chosen and deliver it all” (rap.de).
If you have developed grassroots support – particularly without a major label in the background – then why not simply continue to do your own thing regardless? To this end, Ufo361 founded his own label “Stay High”. We are hoping for many more releases – perhaps one day we’ll get “Ich bin 100 Berliner”.
