Passenger of the Month in May 2019 – Giant Rooks

Giant Rooks - Wild Stare EP | recordJet

Wild Stare was the first sign of life by Giant Rooks after their acclaimed EP New Estate. On April 19th, 2019, they will release a second EP, named after the very same song. And it shows why they are the most promising newcomer in their native country – Germany. With Wild Stare they put their money where their mouths are, showing their musical spectrum, their exuberant talent, and their infectious serenity.

They’ve come a long way from their beginnings. In 2015 the singer Frederik Rabe, guitarist Finn Schwieters, bassist Luca Göttner, keyboarder Jonathan Wischniowski, and drummer Finn Thomas started Giant Rooks in their hometown of Hamm in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The band won the prestigious Pop-NRW-Award, went on tour with heavyweights such as The Temper Trap and Mighty Oaks and have played the most renowned festivals both at home and abroad. Meanwhile they’ve moved to Berlin, because the biggest of talents need the largest of spaces for possibilities. And Wild Stare shows that they’ve settled in just fine.

The first song Wild Stare is a timeless masterful piece of music; catchy and concise. It takes a peek over the pond but remains firmly grounded as it sounds mature, independent, and unique. Added to this mix is the voice of Frederik Rabe, who can sing lyrics in a way never before heard. Every note is filled with hope; in every syllable lies melancholy. 100 mg, energetic and forward with elements of timeless british and american guitar rock, a trace of folk and electronic music, does the trick of approaching a sensitive matter with a soft disclosure. You can witness the band forming their identity willing to venture into experiments: the pounding yet balladesque King Thinking combines eclectic songwriting with high emotional energy. Went right down constructs a castle of overlapping rhythms whilst casually shuffling towards sunset. This is accentuated songwriting at its best with every chord in the right place. But the Wild Stare EP in its entirety shows other facets as well. Especially lyrically: pressure to perform, the self-optimization-craze; Giant Rooks know exactly what is happening in their generation.

Giant Rooks’ position is cosmopolitan, just like their sound. They’ve already broken out of Germany and landed an international record deal with Irrsinn/Universal. Furthermore they are as used to playing in Manchester or London as other German indie bands are playing in Berlin or Hamburg. And the venues are getting bigger, tickets are sold faster and big chunks of the tour promoting their EP are sold out already.

Giant Rooks are still only in their early 20s and therefore outrageously young. If they continue to write songs with such incredible intensity, the expectations for their debut album are growing wild.
